What to expect in Week 11
On Tuesday we'll start Chapter 5 - Forces and Equilibrium. In this chapter, we'll analyze force vectors. Recollect that vector quantities are different from scalar ones; vector quantities express not only the magnitude of a measurement, but the direction as well.
Some common scalar quantities are length, temperature, speed and time. We can express these measurements fully, with magnitude only; if the weather man states it is 65 degrees Fahrenheit outside, you don't need any other information to completely understand what that means. Alternatively, if I tell you I applied a force of 100 N on my big chocolate lab Walter, you might be curious as to whether this force was, (1) applied upward, in order to lift him; (2) downward, in order to push him down; or, (3) sideways, in order to push him out of the way. To express this applied force properly, I need to state, "In order to rescue my dog from an incoming meteor, I pushed him to the side with 100 N of force." You will learn this week that force vectors can be represented three different ways:
