During Week 5, students will be given the law! Newton's first law, that is...
Updated September 18th, 2021
This is your class landing page, you will want to come here every week to check for any class announcements. Make certain you read everything on this page and understand completely all the directions. Week 4 Summary
On Tuesday, we briefly discussed in class the concepts of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. If you are having any struggles teasing these words apart, what they mean, and the equations used to solve problems involving these, take the time to look at the Chapter 2, Section 2.1 video once again (linked below).
What to expect in Week 5
On Thurs, we began the KNEX Motion Graphs Laboratory. During this lab we experimentally determined the velocity of two KNEX cars, then started graphing their velocities on a Position vs. Time graph. When we return to class on Tuesday, after graphing the data points, we'll calculate the slope (m) for the graph, and derive an equation for the lines of both the faster and slower cars.
Then, we are going to determine at what position along the four-meter track the faster car will pass up the slower, if the slower is given a 1.5 meter head start. We will determine this three ways:
The completion of the lab on Tues will conclude Chapter 2. Do make sure when you return to class on Tuesday that you bring the KNEX Graphing Motion laboratory we started on Thursday!
The law comes down this Thursday... really, three laws
Nearly everyone can quote from memory Newton's First Law: An object in motion (or rest) will stay in its state of motion (or rest) until an outside force acts on it in some way. We take this law for granted, but in Newton's day, this was a controversial statement! We can imagine how bodies act in space - with little to no gravitational field acting on them, or the friction due to air, so Newton's First Law makes perfect sense; yet in his day, people had no idea what a gravity-free environment would look like - this really demonstrates the genius of Isaac Newton - he could imagine this!
This Thursday we start Chapter 3 - Laws of Motion, which is divided into the following:
Test #1 NOW due anytime before Tues, Sept 28th
I will emaiI Test #1 to your parents by Tuesday afternoon, covering Chapters 1 and 2. If they do not receive it by then, please email me immediately. According to your syllabus, this exam was due this coming Tuesday, but since we did not get the chance to complete the analysis of the graphing lab, I've extended the due date for both the test, Chapter 2 Homework, KNEX Motion Graphs Laboratory, and the Skill & Practice assignments.
This is a closed-note, closed-book, closed-internet exam. All you need to take the exam is your calculator, pen/ pencil, the exam itself, and your brilliant mind. Make sure your parent signs the exam where indicated and the exam is returned in a sealed envelope, with their signature across the seal. Check-off List of Things to Do:
Please make sure you do the following before next week:
