While Week 7 was in free fall, Week 8 will see great momentum!
Updated October 9th, 2021
This is your class landing page, you will want to come here every week to check for any class announcements. Make certain you read everything on this page and understand completely all the directions. Former weekly pages are archived under the Quarter 1 Archives tab. Week 7 Summary
This week, for all intents and purposes, we completed Chapter 3 - Laws of Motion, with the exception of the Free Fall lab (which is really collecting data on the Skill & Practice 3I - Free Fall assignment).
On Thursday of this past week, I intended for us to perform the Free Fall lab. It will go something like this: we will drop a cornhole bag from the second story balcony, and ascertain the time it takes to hit the ground. We will do this four times and then calculate an average time. From this time data, we'll use a kinematic equation you are already familiar with (d = 1/2 at^2) to experimentally determine the height of the rail. Then we will compare our empirically derived height to the height value we measure (which will be called the theoretical height) and then calculate our % error. All this should not take more than about 25 minutes. What to expect in Week 8
This coming Tuesday after completing the Free Fall laboratory, we'll start Chapter 4 - Conservation Laws, which is divided into the following sections:
Newton's third law has an even greater application when we consider the idea of momentum. Any body in motion has momentum, and when that body collides with another body, it transfers it's momentum to that body. We will go into more detail on why this is important (especially in contact sports) over the next two weeks. Make sure you watch the videos linked below as assigned in the Check-off List of Things to Do on this Weebly page. Note that Section 4.1 correlating to your textbook is broken down into four videos, not just one. This is because Section 4.1 had a lot of content and I didn't want to overload you with a single 55 minute video! Test covering Chapter's 3 and 4 will be combined, since the two chapters work very well as a unit.
Their subjects really do go very well together. I will let you know in the next week or so when you can expect to turn that test in so you are prepared. Check-off List of Things to Do:
