This week we will start the first chapter on nomenclature - how to name simple, organic compounds. The IUPAC system of nomenclature allows us to do two things:
For alkanes that are not straight chains, their names can be modified to reflect their cyclic nature:
Substituents are distinct from the root structures (as seen in Table N1-1 and N1-2), and bear names similar to their root counterparts with the "ane," suffix replaced with an "yl" suffix.
When naming alkanes that have substituents, you need to apply these rules:
Take a look at the other three substituted alkanes above, and make certain you understand the rules applied in determining their names.

You should have all received Test #3, covering Chapter 3, in your email boxes last week. This is a closed-note, closed-book, closed-brilliant-relative-or-neighbor exam. Please turn this in by Thursday, November 4th.
Theoretical Article first draft due Nov 2nd
