The week before break, we finished Chapter 5 by working on the laboratory with the New York balance. From this lab, you should have noticed that when torques are equivalent on either side of a fulcrum you have rotational equilibrium. The masses hanging on either side need not be the same, because torque can be adjusted by sliding the mass (manipulating the "r") along the ruler. Recollect that torque is the product of a force applied (F) over a given length of lever arm (r), or T = Fr.
